The measures of King Sebastião
Details of King Sebastião's Standards

The standards of volume measures for solids and for liquids that King Sebastião ordered to be distributed throughout the “comarcas” (districts), based on those of Lisbon, and “calibrated by those of the mentioned City” are easily recognizable, as they present, on one side, the Coat of Arms of Portugal, with the characteristic crown of the king and, normally on the opposite side, the name of the monarch, in Latin: “SEBASTIANVS”.

The law itself explained that “(…) they will be obliged to carry bronze standards, from the mentioned City of Lisbon, where they will have to be made, marked by my Royal Arms, (…)”
