Although the Ordinances that King Manuel I ordered to be proclaimed, which we now call the Manueline Ordinances, were in effect, new laws known as the Extravagant Laws had been published.

Because of this, King Filipe I decided to order that a new compilation of Ordinances be printed that included this legislation. Since he died without completing this work, it was his son, Filipe II, who promulgated this new collection on January 11, 1603.

We can confirm that the king regarded this as an update of the “Ordinances and Laws, which were made in the time of King Dom Manuel, in glorious memory, my great-grandfather.”
