The fact that the monarch reigned over both Portugal and Spain did not alter what had been done toward attempting to standardize the weights and measures and guarantee the distribution of the standards that allowed a more efficient metrological control.
In Portugal, the volume standards could take various forms, but they followed a common principle. Thus, all the standards, big or small, were identified with the king´s name and the Coat of Arms of Portugal, in order to guarantee their authenticity and reliability and demonstrate the genuine commitment to the standardization of the national measures throughout the kingdom.
