The “Weights and Measures in Portugal” exhibition allows us to follow the evolution of the metrological systems used in Portugal from its foundation as an independent country to the present day.
We can see measuring instruments whose units were referred to in municipal charters and different legislation regarding the “length”, “volume” and “mass”. The exhibition shows 3 distinct periods of the history of portuguese metrology: the Middle Ages, some relevant standards of the various metrological reforms that took place at the beginning of the modern era, with King Manuel I and King Sebastião and, finally, the adoption of the Decimal Metric System, which later led to the International System of Units.
