Standard of almude of King Sebastião
Padrão de almude de D. Sebastião
Standard of almude of King Sebastião

Object made of bronze, with a circular base, bulge and neck, with two elliptical handles, which end in volutes. It has three embossed friezes.

It is a standard of one almude, dating from 1576, ordered by D. Sebastião.

On the neck, next to the rim, it presents the coat of arms of Portugal (Latin shield with five escutcheons loaded with five bezants and bordure with seven castles, surmounted by a closed royal crown) and, immediately below, the inscription:

“SEBASTIANVS IR PREGNOR SVOR MENSURAS”

“AQUAVIT ANO MDLXXVI”

On the opposite side, it has a rectangular cut, which serves to define the volume of the measure.
