The côvado of Sabugal
Igreja da Misericordia, Sabugal

In a wall of the Igreja da Misericórdia (Church of Mercy), in Sabugal, there is a stone with two crosses of Malta engraved, one on the right and the other on the left, several inscriptions and, horizontally, a length measure, which corresponds to the côvado.

This stone was previously in another place, predictably in the vertical, and functioned as a standard of the côvado, having been placed in the Church in the 14th century.

In 1942 the Repartição de Pesos e Medidas (Bureau of Weights and Measures) asked the President of the Junta de Educação Nacional (National Education Board) to classify this standard of the côvado as a property of public interest.

The piece that we can see in this exhibition is a replica of the original, which is in the Igreja da Misericórdia, in Sabugal.
